Quellipsis..?

This site has ostensibly been created to chronicle amateur forays into the world of punctuation.  The name of the site, quellipsis, refers to a punctuation mark that I have named and am hoping to popularize.

The quellipsis is, as you might guess, a combination of a question mark and an ellipsis.  I find that it is an effective way of communicating in a written way an ending to a sentence that many people voice in conversation, for example, “I know you said you are hungover, but maybe we can just get one drink..?”  There are three forms of the quellipsis: ..?, .?., and ?.. and their usage differs according to how much weight the question mark part of the quellipsis has in the sentence.

Years ago I found myself using ..? from time to time in emails to friends, and it seemed natural to try to put a name to the combination of punctuation.  The portmanteau quellipsis seemed like the obvious choice (like the Brangelina of the punctuation world).

I have some other ideas and thoughts on punctuation that I will be weighing in on from time to time, and I’ll be posting the latest punctuation-related news as it breaks.

So get out there and start using quellipses in all your trailing interrogatives, is there any reason you wouldn’t..?

Love it! I think I’m spending too long proofing my own comments.
